A Musical Journey Begins

“Music… will help dissolve your perplexities and purify your character and sensibilities, and in time of
care and sorrow, will keep a fountain of joy alive in you.” ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Adriana Mejia, a recent high school graduate whose parents work for House of Raeford Farms,
found solace in music for the stress and heartbreak experienced when both her grandfather and best
friend passed away in the same year. She was a sixth-grader at the time when she began her musical
journey learning the clarinet. There soon developed a passion that went far beyond All-County and All-
State band achievements. Adriana literally would get lost in her music.

In 2016, with the assistance of a music scholarship provided by House of Raeford Farms FLOCK, she
began studying piano at Duplin Music Academy in Rose Hill, North Carolina. Amazingly in four years she
has blossomed into a gifted pianist. Melodee Wynne, director of the music academy and Adriana’s
teacher, said that “Adriana has an inner desire to achieve without thinking of the work involved. She is
like a sponge that absorbs all that is poured into her. The love for music is deep in her heart.”

Adriana’s senior piano and clarinet recital included compositions from Beethoven and Bach as well as
the more contemporary arrangements of Michele McLaughlin. And both her musical and academic
talents have been recognized by several major universities. Adriana has decided to continue her
education and musical training at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington.

“My desire is to pursue a career in music, first as a performer and eventually as a teacher,” Adriana
related. “In addition to college, I hope to continue receiving instruction from Mrs. Wynne. She does not
put any limits on my growth, allowing me to rise as high as my ambitions will take me.”

Through the scholarship program with Duplin Music Academy, FLOCK looks for occasions to open the
door for students with a musical gift who might not otherwise be exposed to valuable instruction and
growth opportunities. Adriana is a wonderful illustration of this mission becoming a reality.
